Raleigh Beltline I-540 Project

Southeast Extension

The proposed Raleigh Beltline I-540 project, also known as the Complete 540 project and the Southeast Extension, would extend the Triangle Expressway to complete the 540 Outer Loop around the Raleigh area. Billed as an answer to the transportation, social, and economic needs of Wake and Johnston counties, the project would link Apex, Cary, Clayton, Garner, Fuquay Varina, Holly Springs, and Raleigh. Additionally, it would connect a number of major roadways in southern Raleigh.

With construction slated to begin as soon as spring 2018, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) anticipates selecting the final route for the Complete 540 project in fall 2015. Project planners anticipate that the Southeast Extension will be completed in three separate phases:

  • NC 55 Bypass to US 401
  • US 401 to I-40
  • I-40 to US 64/264 Bypass (I-495)
