The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is widening approximately 2.3 miles of the US 301 Bypass from just south of SR 1836 (May Drive) to NC 43/48 (Benvenue Road). The proposed improvements include widening existing roadways from four to six lanes. Designated as an expressway, the US 301 bypass will have limited control of access—or few driveways—and a posted speed limit of 45 to 60 miles per hour
